Calispell Lake
- Kayaks |
|
Calispell Lake
is an extremely shallow lake that nearly dries up in the
summer, yet water does seem to continuously run through it
even though it may only be a trickle. During spring and
early summer its depth at the most will be 5 feet at its
deepest but on average only 2-3 feet. There is no pronounced
channel anywhere on the lake as the water enters the lake
and then spreads out over a large area. This lake sits in
the middle of grassing land and its shore line is totally
private, however one can access this lake via Calispell
Creek at the McKenzie Rd. bridge. There is an issue with
accessing the lake because as you get very close to the lake
in the creek there is an old beam bridge that sits very low
over the creek. When I went under this bridge I had to lean
myself way back on the kayak to get under the bridge. During
spring run off you will not be able to get under the bridge.
At the HWY bridge where you enter the creek there is ruler
post that has depth readings, I would only progress up the
creek to enter the lake if the depth reads is 29.50 or
under, anything above that and you will not be able to get
under the bridge. Portaging over the bridge or along the
shore line is not allowed as its all private. Paddling into
this lake is to primarily to view the water foul, other than
that there is really nothing else to view. Facilities:
No info. Fishing & Hunting: No fishing info.
Water foul hunting, Ducks and Geese hunting only via kayak.

Calispell Creek
- Kayaks |
|
Calispell Creek
starts high in the Kaniksu National Forest travels
through Power and Calispell Lakes and empties into Pend
Oreille River at the town of Cusick, WA. One can fish on
this creek at Forest Service Rd 3620 just a few miles up the
road from Power Lake. At the Power Lake boat launch one can
paddle up stream a short distance to enjoy the creek or fish
it. Leaving this creek via the boat launch take you to Power
Lake --- acre lake. At the outlet of this lake is the start
again of the creek at the dam. The creek falls a good 40
feet into a canyon that is not navigatible by kayak, etc. a
few miles down this creek after the dam it passes under the
Westside Calispell Rd bridge. At this bridge you can launch
but its very difficult to navigate into Calispell lake as
the creek seems to disappear into a large marsh with no
pronounced channel. During high water I think would be the
only time you could get into the create this way and even
then I would not advise it, its not worth the effort. At the
McKenzie Rd. bridge one can head up stream into Calispell
Lake (See Calispell Lake section above) or go north down
stream to the Pend Oreille River. I found paddling/pedaling
this creek was quite enjoyable at the McKenzie Rd. bridge
and was amazed at the abundance of water foul that that make
this creek there home. As you progress down this creek one
will have to lift and go over and under some bob wire
fences. These fence of course keep cattle from wondering
off, especially when the flow on the creek is low. The
aquatic plant life on this creek is equally impressive
however I never once saw any sign of fish in this creek, yet
I can not believe there is no fish in this creek. There is a
dam on this creek a short distance from where it enters the
Pend Oreille River that will block fish migrating up this
creek. It is fairly easy to portage around the dam but one
will have to walk through some tall grass and some mud to
the creeks bank. The best place to do this on the right/west
side of the creek right next to the log boom. Once up on the
creeks bank there is a small gravel road over the top of the
dike and rail-road-tracks that is part of the dam system. On
the other side of the dike there is narrow dirt trail to the
waters edge. Once you enter this point it only is about a
half mile if that to the Pend Oreille River. There is a boat
launch with park (facilities includes paved boat launch,
dock, restrooms, picnic area, basket ball court,
bike/walking trail, and running water) about a mile up river
(south) from the exit site of the creek into Pend Oreille
River. Honestly I would only navigate this creek during late
spring or early summer as the creek gets real shallow during
the late summer heat.

video coming soon... |

This
is a view of the creek to show all the aquatic plant
life. Unfortunately there is some milfoil in the
creek but not so much that you can not enjoy
paddling/pedaling it. |

1. This
is the bridge for N. Forest Service Rd 3520. The
area around this bridge is a popular place to camp
and fish. |
|

2. This
is the launch site into the creek and Power Lake.
One can paddle up the creek a short distance to fish
and take in the scenery. |

3. This
is dam the backs up the water of Calispell Creek to
create Power Lake. When it comes to reservoirs it
looks a lot like a natural lake. The water from this
reservoir plummets about 40 feet into a canyon and the
creeks next stop is Calispell Lake. |
|

4. This
is a view from the Westside Calispell Rd. bridge.
The creek has a fairly well defined channel but
disappears into a large marsh at Calispell Lake. |

5. This
is a picture of me paddling/pedaling and sailing
Calispell Lake. It is very wide open to the wind and
very shallow of only 2-3 feet deep (maybe 5 feet
deep in some areas). Lots of water foul live at this
lake. |
|

6. Just
before you enter or exit Calispell Lake this bridge
can be a major barrier. During spring
run off you can not pass under it and not until
spring or early summer is the water low enough to
allow you to pass under it and even then there is
only about 3 feet of clearance. All land around this
bridge and the bridge itself is private property with no
public access allowed. |

7. Mckenzie rd. bridge is the main access point to enter
the creek (and Calispell Lake) and the only access point where you can
get into Calispell Lake. Going down stream you will
have to pass through about 5 barb wire fences, it is
easy to get through them but do not access this
creek during spring run off when getting caught in
this wire fences would be dangerous. |
|

8. This
is the Calispell Dam and spillway. There is a log
boom that creates a barrier to getting to close to
the dam, however do not get close to this dam during
spring run off. You can see in the picture that the
take-out point is next to the log boom across the
creek in the picture (east side of the creek). |

9. After
exiting the creek by the dam one crosses the
dike/rail road tracks via a gravel road. Once over
the tracks stay close to the dike bank and a very
short trail will take you to the waters edge and
right next to the spillway. On entering you will
ride the current of the spillway into deeper water.
The Pend Oreille River is only a few hundred feet
from this dike/spillway. |

Chain
Lakes
- Kayaks
The Chain Lakes
is two lakes in a deep canyon system that is very remote in
a sense but is home to a small community of homes. The State
of WA. owns a small narrow piece of land that acts as the
access point to these lakes. There is a short trail that is
just wide enough to walk on and at times can be difficult to
take your water craft through due to all the high grass,
scrubs, etc. along the trail. The put-in site is a narrow
muddy cut through the marsh. The first lake you enter from
the put-in is the East Chain lake. This lake is deep at
about 100 ft as its deepest and void of any milfoil, etc.
due to its rocky bottom and depth. I found it a nice place
to paddle/pedal or sail, and the scenery is awesome with the
high canyon walls. When turning south and west from the
access point you will enter a short milfoil infested channel
to the west Chain lake. There is a channel through the
aquatic plant life that is quite beautiful. Once you enter
this lake it drops to a depth of 40 or more feet and it too
has a rocky bottom and thus no aquatic plant life to deal
with. Going west you will come to the outlet that you can
paddle a short distance, the water is clear and when I was
there last I saw a lot of large trout swimming in this river
area...
I want to come back and fish this spot.

Cougar
Lake & Pond
- Kayaks |
|
Cougar Lake is
on the west side of Trimble Creek Rd. and Cougar Pond is on
the east side of the road, just a few hundred feet up the
road. I think they got the names of these body of waters
wrong as the Pond I think is bigger than the lake and should
be switched. If you want to play around on these creeks with
a kayak then the Pond is more interesting as its set deep in
the woods with lots of logs and creek at its north end.
Camping is accessible along all the road and around the
lakes. Fishing is popular in this area due to all the creeks
and near by Power Lake. There is some fishing done in the
Pond but I am told not in the Lake due to lack of fish.

Horseshoe & Blue
Lakes

MAP |

This lake as its name indicates is shaped like a horseshoe.
This lake is a very popular to kayak, sail, and fish
on. Because there is a 5 mph speed limit the annoying
presence of jet skis and ski boats do not exist. I would say
that this lake is one of the most unique lakes within the
Inland NW because of its shape, features, and vista. On the
northeast side of the lake is a beautiful water fall called Exley Fall with some small pools at its base that during
the hot summer some people will sit in to cool off. To access the
falls travel via boat northeast to a narrow passage into the
east side of the lake, once through the passage you will
easily see the falls. Another unique feature is the
geological marvel called the Devils Well, which is directly south of the falls on the
east side of the lake (Latitude 48.1114924/48-06'43"N, Longitude
-117.4165613/117-24'32"W, Elevation 2,037 ft). This
well is a large
vertical and round hole in the rock. Not to distract from
the wonder of this feature but the interesting fact about
this well is it was created much in the same way a toilet
creates a circular flushing motion. Water cascades into the
well and swerrals, and then exits the well cracks and
sometimes overflows running down the hill into the lake. The
only time of year you can see this action is during spring
run off as there is no stream of water to consistently feeds
the well through out the dry season. The well always has water in it and is a must
site to see. To access the well after the falls you will pass
through a narrow passage to the south with high cliffs and
you will see an inclined wooded clearing area with a well
traveled trail up the hill, the trail will take you directly
to the well. The trail is only a 100 ft long or so to the
well. Continuing south after the well you will enter the end
of the lake and the little Spokane river. If you portage
over the logs that block the river you will enter a series
of river pools that are enjoyable to paddle or swim in when
there is little current.
Facilities:
One wide hard packed gravel launch, large
parking lot, one vault toilet, Discovery Pass required to
use this site. For the pass and fishing info call the WA.
Fish & Game, Spokane office, 509-456-4082. Fishing:
Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, Largemouth Bass,
Yellow Perch, Crappie, Brown Bullhead Catfish. Bait
typically used? Troll with wedding ring spinners tipped with
maggots. Season is April-Oct. Catching 10 lb. fish is not
uncommon on this lake.
Directions:
Take U.S. 2
north from Spokane for 20 miles and turn west (left) on Eloika Lake Road, following it
three miles to Division Road.
Turn north (right) on Division
Road, which becomes Horseshoe
Lake Road somewhere along the
line, and follow it 7.5 miles to
the lake. LOCATION - 48,110,

Devil's Well - This picture may make it appear this

time of year. See Horse Lake video for better perspective. |
