MEDICAL LAKES
AREA |
|
Alderman Lake
Alderman Lake is on the West side of Spokane County just a few miles
north of I90 N. of the city of Tyler at exit 257. Alderman is not
really a lake but a field that SOMETIMES fills with water when its a really wet spring.
So really it should be called Alderman field. I only mention
this lake (not a lake) as it appears on some maps as a lake but
honestly it should not be labeled on any map as anything closely
resembling a lake, heck its not even a mud hole. Due to the high and
low elevation of this area it is very common in spring for lakes and ponds
to appear but as soon as it gets hot they evaporate quickly.

Clear
Lake (375 acres) – Mid Draft Boats |
|
This is a wonderful boating lake and popular for water
skiing. St. Lukes run there annual Ski for all event on
this lake (water skiing for those with disAbilities).
Sailing on this lake is also popular with winds that tend to
come from the south mostly but sometimes from the north,
and really makes for some nice reaches.
Located 2 miles south of the town of Medical Lake, Clear
Lake is 2 miles long with a 1/2 miles wide, and 120'
deep.
I have sailed this lake many times with consistent winds
each time I have sailed on this lake. Of course when it
gets really hot out is when you will have the least
about of wind, but then is great for water skiing. The
North and South end of these lakes are the places to
fish with lots of weeds, etc. for the fish to hid in.
This lake has 3 a resort and a public access on the
south end. There is the military
recreational facility/resort on the south end and next
to it is the lakes sole public boat launch. On the North
and South end of the lake are the two public resorts.
Directions: From Spokane, go west on Interstate 90, go
16 miles to Salnave Road, then north on Salnave Road 50'
to Clear Lake Road, then east 1 mile on Clear Lake Road
to Public Fishing Area.
Info:
Mallard Bay
Resort (509-299-3830) is on the South
end of the lake, with RV and tent sites, cabins, docks,
boat rentals. The boat launch is paved with no power
lines or branches hanging over the launch. This resort
is CLOSED Wed. & Thur. of each week. and is open from
the first Sat. of April through labor day. DAN'S
LANDING (509-299-3717) Resort is on the North end of
the lake with RV & Tent sites, along with some unique
floating cabins (you can fish right out your
front door), docks, and boat rentals. The boat launch paved but is not suitable to launch a sailboat
from due to the 2 power lines that cross it. If you are
in the military there is the CLEAR LAKE MILITARY RESORT,
ask about this resort through your leaders to get more
info. This Military Resort has RV & tents, sites, a play
ground, and more. The boat launch is paved. The PUBLIC
BOAT LAUNCH is paved and Low water conditions make
launching trailerable keelboats difficult. No power
lines or branches interfere with launch a sailboat from
this site.

Duck Lake / Marsh
Duck
lake is just a short distance West of Granite lake and just right off of I90
in a marshy area. As its name implies, its great for
ducks but no good for boating as it's full of foliage
and typically seems to have a little water left even in
late summer when most marshes in this area are totally dried up. Habitat like this is
very important to water foul. The land around this marsh
is totally private. To view this pond off of I90 just
watch to the right (N.) West bound right after Granite
lake. |

Espanola
Ponds / Espanola State Land site - Kayaks
Espanola Ponds / Espanola State Land Site
is owned by the State of WA. and leased by both the
Spokane Bird Dog Association (SBDA) & Spokane Retriever
Club. These organizations maintain this location so
please show respect and leave no trace of activity
there.
These ponds are located W. of W. Medical Lake. There are
four major ponds with several smaller ponds that come
and go depending on how late you visit the area in the
summer. With high winds coming off the desert, and
completely in the open, the ponds are perfect to sail a
sail yak or RC model sailboat on. This location is
always open via the pedestrian gate access and is a
great place to bring your dog. You will have to pack
your kayak into the ponds manually. Club members are the
only ones allowed to access the site via car/truck. Also
please check the SBDA website to make sure you do not
access this site during any of their events. For a map
of this location and more info related to the SBDA, go
to
www.spokanebirddog.org.
Directions: Traveling W. from the Spokane
Airport on HWY 2 turn L. (S.) onto S. Espanola Rd. then
turn R. (W.) onto W. Chase Rd. which when you turn right
(S.) on this road it turns into S. Ladd Rd. The site is
just a few miles down the road to your right (W.).

Granite (22 acres) & Willow Lakes (29 acres) – Dinghies |
|
Granite
and Willow Lakes are two nice lakes that are
great for general boating or sailing due to the strong winds that regularly
blow over them. The lakes run 2-15' deep and are nice
for small non daggerboard dinghies and kayaks. Combustion
motors are not allowed on these lakes. There is a
private Island on the East end of Granite lake next to W.
Medical Lake Four Lakes Rd causeway. There is a causeway (W.
Medical Lake Four Lakes Rd.) that
separates Granite Lake from Willow lake, which SHOULD be your
access point to both of these lakes (there are no
developed boat launches on these lakes). You can access
Willow lake from this causeway but as for Granite Lake
there is an old barbwire fence with no trespassing signs
along the causeway that blocks ones entrance into
Granite Lake. Actually this fence is not legal due to
the fact that the county owns the causeway and also no one owns navigate-able
waters (however out of not wanting to cause an issue do
not portage over this fence). If you can get to the shore of a lake legally
then you can access it unless otherwise posted by the
City,
County, or Federal Government, no personal land owners
can post restrictions signage on public lands. County
and Federal lands are owned by tax payers and thus can
be accessed by the public, again unless
otherwise posted by the City, County, or Federal
Government. I90 runs along the South shore of Granite lake and thus is
owned by the public (there are no restrictions signs
along this area) and there is a guard rail that curves
out to get you off the Interest paved shoulder, so this
is your access point to Granite Lake. The bank is steep
to the Lake so caution should be exercised and is best
suited for portaging a kayak down, so for the general
public dinghies cannot be launched into this lake.
Please respect private lands at all times and Do Not
Trespass EVER! If in doubt regarding accessing a lake
via land that is unmarked contact
the county the lake and land is located in to get
correct access info.
The lakes are located just west of Spokane on I-90.
Spokane County has purchased a tract of land along
Willow Lake to develop a water access park. Right now
via the causeway one can only hand launch a small dinghy
or kayak. Granite and
Willow Lakes are both great for boating such as kayaking
or sailing, however particularly in late summer and fall
the water is very low and makes it hard for any type of
boat with a runner or daggerboards, etc. to navigate
without hitting the bottom. The lakes also at this time
are soup like with algae and in Willow Lake there is a
lot of iron in the water. Launching is time of year is
also difficult because you have to walk in the mud to
launch.
Directions:
From Spokane Take exit 270 (going east take exit 395),
right (west) on W. Medical Lake Four Lakes Rd., Left on
W. Silver Lake Rd.

Heron
Pond (20 acres when full) – Kayaks
Heron Pond would only be good to access during the very
wet times of the year as this is the only time there is
enough water in it; A nice feature is that it’s right
off the road and easy to access via hand launching. Due
to its size, shallow depth, and weeds it isn’t a pond I
would only kayak on this pond. This pond
is south of and connected to Clear Lake via a marsh.
Directions: From Spokane, go west on
Interstate 90, go 16 miles to Salnave Road and stay on
this road until you see the pond on your right just past
S. Blue Heron RD. Just park on the edge of the Salnave
Rd. and access the lake by hand.

you will see Clear lake on the map. From Clear Lake
slide down a little more (S.) and you will see Heron

Hidden
Lake (67 acres) – Dinghies
The name of this lake is totally appropriate as it truly
is hidden with private farm land all the way around it
and hills that block the view of it (next to and E. of
Lonelyville Lake). I believe this would be a great
dinghy lake and a great sailing lake with great winds coming off the
desert. The depth of this lake is about 5-10' at its
deepest. The south end is a marsh and the north end has
high hills on either side with a rocky shoreline.
Directions/Maps: Go to
www.mapquest.com
and type in the City of Medical Lake then follow S.
Lefevre St. to W. Fancher Rd. taking this road (which
turns into a gravel road) until you reach S. Ladd Rd. At
this point, to your left (S.) you will see a pond. This
pond is just a few hundred ft. north of Hidden Lake.
Again, sorry there is no access to this lake but you may
be able to get permission to access the lake via a land
owner/farmer. |
 |
|
Lonelyville
Lake (70 acres) – Kayaks
This lake is appropriately named as it’s out in the
middle of no where next to Hidden Lake and has no public
access due to being totally surrounded by private farm
land. There are also several ponds next to this lake
that dry up in the summer. This is a wide yet shallow
lake fed by a stream to the south. This lake would be a
good kayaking lake and possibly good for sail yakking with great winds coming off the
desert. I have been un-able to find any fishing info
about these lakes. The depth of this lake is about 10' at its very
deepest during high water. The lake is surrounded by a
marsh with lots of water foul. Directions/Maps:
Go to
www.mapquest.com
and type in the City of Medical Lake then follow S.
Lefevre St. to W. Fancher Rd. (turns into a gravel road)
until you reach S. Gray Rd. Turn left (S.); you will see
water to your right (W.). From the road it is a good
location to view water foul during the springtime. Again
there is no public access to this area.
 |
|
Meadow
Lake (90 acres) – Dinghies
During spring, this lake is a nice location for kayaking
and dinghy
sailing with a beautiful marsh all the way around it.
Its is a no combustion motor lake.
Mid to late summer the water is much lower and is then
more appropriate for sail yakking. The lake is popular
for bird watching. There is private land all the way
around the lake but some non-residents access the lake
via the rail-road track (not recommended). There is a
fair amount of open water on this lake so kayaks and
maybe small dinghies would work well on this
lake. Directions: Meadow Lake is
just off of Interstate 90 (Exit 270) onto HWY 904 west
of Spokane next to the city of Four Lakes, WA. See
launching instructions above in this paragraph.

Medical
Lake (149 acres) - Dinghies
I
really like this little lake and take the opportunity
sail on when I can. You can access this
lake from the South end via primitive
boat launches, there is also a small park on the North
end with no boat launch but you could launch a kayak
from this park. My daughter and I sailed on this lake from one
end to the other and really enjoyed it. There is a small
Island on it named M & M Island – (more like a rock with
some dirt on it) and it’s more than deep enough for
dinghies with dagger boards. There is also a nice
Water Front Park (http://www.medicallake.org/parks/waterfront.html)
on the south west side with swim area and hiking trails.
(I was surprised to see how much was available around a
six acre lake.) The city of Medical Lake is on the East
shore which also has a nice park. I met a couple that
own a house on Medical lake with a Hobie 16 on the beach
which indicated they sail the lake all the time and have
great fun with winds that are very consistent throughout
the year. The interesting thing about this lake is that
it has a lot of trees around it and a big hill to the
west but this hill and trees seem to not block the wind
too much. Overall a nice lake to boat on and great to
swim in, and I might add; it’s a NO-motor lake.

Otter
Lake (19 acres) – Dinghies
Otter Lake is a good sized totally private lake with
10-20 foot depth, several ponds around it and is a great
lake for small dinghies and sail yaks. Winds on this
lake are fairly good (like all the lakes in the Medical
lakes area) due to the desert winds. One of the land
owners has a dock on the lake and he regularly water
skis on it. Directions: Take the WA-902
W exit- EXIT 272- toward MEDICAL LAKE., Turn RIGHT onto
WA-902 / W MEDICAL LAKE RD. Continue to follow WA-902.,
Turn LEFT onto N PRENTIS ST., Turn RIGHT onto E CAMPBELL

this road is a private road so ask a land owner before
accessing. Maps: To view a map click on

Silver
Lake - Mid Draft Boats
Silver Lake is similar to the other lakes in this
section even though it’s a much longer lake (Longest
lake in the Medical Lakes area) and the wind really rips
from one end to the other during those summer wind
storms. This is a great boating lake for any water sport
activity. Water depth for this lake range from 5 to 20'.
The South end of the lake is very shallow with depths of
2-7'. Silver Lake has two resorts located on South end
of the lake. On the North end is also the lakes sole
public boat launch with no power lines or low hanging
branches to block the launch of sailboats. At the
South end of this lake there is a “Big Swamp” pond area,
and just as its name implies, it’s a big swamp and a
great place to view water foul. Plus on the South end is
a small flat Island. The South end of the lake is very
shallow from 2-7'. Directions: From Spokane, go west
on I-90, go 10 miles to Four Lakes, then northwest on W.
Medical Lake-Four Lakes Road, go 3 miles to Public
Fishing sign. Resorts: The
public boat
launch is located right off of W. Medical
Lake-Four Lakes Rd. and Rudy's Resort (you can see both
Resorts from this public launch site). RUBY'S RESORT
(509-299-7829) has RV & tents sites, a dock, and boat
rentals. This resort has NO boat launch but you could
easily launch a kayak from this site. The fact about
this resort as compared to the other resort on this lake is that it
has lots of trees for shade from the hot summer days.
PICNIC PINES RESORT (509-299-3223) has RV & tents sites,
big beach area, and a paved boat launch with no power
lines or low hanging branches. This resort also has a large beach for
great swimming. This road is off of S. Silver Lake Rd.
just off of W. Medical Lake-Four Lakes Rd. Maps:

Page
Pond (11 acres) – Kayaks
Page Pond is a bowl that fills up with water during the
more wet times of the year and would be ok for kayking but other than that it would be too shallow.
There are a lot of weeds around the lake as well. Page
Pond is a totally PRIVATE lake and all roads leading to
it are private. Directions:

Ring
Lake (12 acres) – Kayaks
Ring Lake is an interesting looking lake with an island
in the middle of it. It is in the open as compared to
many of the other larger lakes in the area, and even
though it’s a shallow lake it stays full of water all
summer and would be a good kayak lake. There are
several ponds that surround the lake. Directions:

Tule
Pond (7 acres) – Kayaks
Tule Pond is in a field and is shallow and tends to
almost, if not totally, dry up in the summer. During the
wet times of the year this pond would be ok for kayaking even though its a totally private
pond, which may or may not be true. In the picture to
the right you see a grassy area with a small bay. This
would be a good place to launch but you must ask the
land owner at the house to the left of this site for
permission to use his land to launch from. Directions:

West
Medical Lake (235 acres) – Mid Draft Boats |
|
West
Medical Lake has a resort for small powerboats, etc. on
the south end in Lakes Memorial Park. It’s a very run
down facility but still a good location to access the
lake from. This lake is just 1 mile west of Medical Lake
but seems to have better winds than Medical Lake due to
the fact it sits on the west side of a large hill and is
very much in the open where the wind can whip across it;
and I was told it has consistent West winds. The water
is shallow and warm (water level is pretty stable even
during the hottest time of the summer) and tends to have
a lot of algae. This lake is great for just flying back
and forth on, and catching some big wind.
Directions:
From Spokane, go west 10 miles in I-90 to Four Lakes,
then northwest to Medical Lake, then south 1 mile to
Public Fishing sign.
