Fishtrap
Lake (196 acres) - Deep Draft Boats/Keelboats
Fishtrap lake was
named after the willow fish traps that the Indians used to catch Red
Horse Suckers at its outlet creek. The lake is known for its great
trout fishing. This popular Lake is great for boating and swimming.
As with all the lakes in the Scab Lands the lake gets a lot of wind
throughout the year so it would be a great sailing lake even though
because its narrow you will be doing a lot of tacking. It is long and
narrow at 2.2 miles long and 30' deep at its deepest. In the
Fishtrap Lake area there are
extensive wetlands. There are numerous trails crisscrossing the area, offering
several loop hikes and access to Fishtrap lake and Hog Canyon,
wildlife viewing areas. Fishtrap Lake Resort has been on this lake since 1902. It has a nice
primitive boat launch that is great to launch powerboats or kayaks
from but due to a low hanging cable from a dock to a cliff
(clearance from the water is about 8-10 ft) there is
no way a sailboat would be able to leave this launch into open water.
Luckily there is a public launch ramp right next to this resort that
one could launch a deep draft boat or keelboat from. This launch is
on an incline so sailors should plan accordingly to step your mast. If you want to use the
restroom and docks at the resort you will have to pay to do so. This
small resort is privately owned and so paying to use their
facilities is a great way to support such a historic resort. If your
kids like Buffalo ask the resort manager about it and they may allow
you to go see them. Directions:
Fishtrap Lake Resort 509-235-2284.
From Spokane, go west on I-90 to Fishtrap Exit 254, then south 2
miles on Old State Highway to Fishtrap Rd. There is both a resort
launch and public access launch.

Sprague
Lake (Second to largest Scab Land lake @ 1,840 acres)
-
Mid Draft Boats |
|
Ok so this lake is Lincoln & Adams Counties with 2 access points in
Lincoln County and 2 in Adams County. This large
lake is two miles west of the town of Sprague, along the south side
of I-90. Winds typically come from the west and at times can exceed
20 knots. This is a fantastic sailing lake due to the consistent
winds and open water, and great for Ice sailing as well. Due to the
consistent winds on this lake its not so good of course for water
skiing. Harper
Island which is a bird sanctuary is on the S.W. end of the lake. This is a
very popular fishing lake for walleye, largemouth and smallmouth
bass, crappie, channel catfish, perch, bluegill, and rainbow trout.
Access is southwest through the town of Sprague. WDFW has a public
access site with boat ramp and toilet on the southwest end of the
lake, and a private boat launch with minimal parking fees is located
on the southeast side, both off of Danekas Road. Two resorts are
available, one at the northeast end
(Sprague

and quick access to the more windy part of the lake. There is a tree
over the boat launch that you will have to negotiate depending on
your mast height.

and type in Sprague Lake, WA., select #1 to get correct lake, and
pan in. Directions: From Spokane on I-90 W. take 245 and from there
you follow the signs to the resorts, etc. The town of Sprague is
really run down for example you will turn on B street to get to 1st.
street yet 1st street is marked incorrectly as B Street. So going to
the resorts and landings you follow B street to B Street.
