Blue Lake (100 acres) - Small Boats with Motors

Blue Lake is a private lake with public access in a beautiful forested area. As long as the public respects this lake and takes care of it, it will remain open to the public. This is a "day use area only," and "no wake" lake, so of course jet skis, ski boats, etc. are not allowed. The boat launch is gravel and mud. During low water times of the year the launch is very muddy and not suitable to launch any boats from a trailer (your vehicle and trailer will most likely get stuck). Regardless of the water level the boat launch is only a couple feet deep with a channel extending into the lake through dense aquatic plant life. The lake is almost totally surrounded by aquatic plant life such as lily and dollar pads, and a lot of cattails. There is however broken rock areas along the south shore with some snags. A stream enter the lake creates a beautiful small delta with some sandy areas. Deep creek exits the lake but is hard to see and not accessible due to again extensive aquatic plant life covering and snags. Cocolalla Lake (800 acres) – Mid Draft Boats

Lake Cocolalla is in Bonner County about 25 miles south of Sandpoint, Idaho and 35 miles North of the City of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This is a fabulous water sport lake and well known for being a great water skiing/wakeboarding lake particularly in the hot summer months when the winds are light or non existent, otherwise the lake has consistent winds that come from either the North or South for superb sailing conditions. It is a nice open lake allowing the winds to beautifully cascade across it.

As with most lakes summer is the time for the lightest winds so morning and evening sailing are best; for the rest of the year the winds are more consistent and stronger. Still from reports of people who regularly sail on this lake I am told the winds tend to be very consistent throughout the year. There is a public boat launch with paved ramp, single dock, pit toilets, and very large gravel parking lot. During late summer the depth of the launch may be only a few feet deep. The launch is free to use, and there is free camping (10 sites with no hookups) with a 3 day limit. There is a resident that monitors the park in the summer. There is one tent site next to the water and other sites are designed for camp trailers and RV's. Active railroad tracks pass the east side of the camping area so when the trains pass it sounds like its going to run you over. The north and west side of the lakes shoreline is private. On the northwest corner Cocolalla Creek enters the lake. This is a popular kayaking creek and if you portage around the snags and many beaver dams you will enter Round Lake which is within Round Lake State Park. On the southeast end of the lake Fish Creek is its outlet. Fishing: Black Crappie, Bullhead Catfish, Channel Catfish, Cutthroat Trout, Eastern Brook Trout, German Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch. See sign when fishing at this lake. For more fishing info call 208-769-1414. Lake Dimensions & Coordinates: 800 acres; Maximum depth estimated at 30 ft; elevation 2203 ft; Coordinates T55N R2W Sec 5MNP, 6JR, 7 (southwest 1/2), 8 (northwest 1/4), 8 (east 3/4). Longitude 116d 35m 58s -to- 116d 37m 36s west. Latitude 48d 6m 30s -to- 48d 8m 31s N. Granite Lake (20 acres) - Small Boats with Motors

The boat launch is a mix of gravel and mud, and there is a dock along the launch. Water depth at end of dock at the launch is only about 3 feet. There is a slide area right behind the camping area, which to me seems to be a bit potentially hazardous for campers. The lake is an electric motors only lake. Hoodoo Lake - Small Boats with Motors

Hoodoo Lake is a very unknown lake with no signs or info available about it. The lake is about 1.5 miles long during the spring high water and is 15' deep at its deepest. Fishing is done on this lake but hunting water foul is not allowed due to private and forest services land use rules. There is a primitive non-maintained fine gravel and mud boat launch to this lake with no restroom or running water. People do camp near this boat launch location. To my knowledge, there is no sign indicating private land, land use rules such as no camping, etc. Again "no hunting" is an area policy. Want the feel of the Ocean on an Inland Lake? Then lake Pend Oreille is your ticket. This lake is great for almost any size boat, but at times has ocean like swells and can possibly have very rough ocean like storm conditions (largest lake in Idaho). So keep your attention to the weather reports, particularly when on the east side of the lake where its challenging to hide from bad weather due to the lack of places to hid from bad weather.

Lake Pend Oreille has 111 miles of shoreline, is 43 miles long, fed by the Clark Fork River and other smaller rivers and streams, and is at least 11,158 feet deep. If the US Navy gave out the official stats for the areas they utilize they would show that they deemed some areas of the lake classified and do not supply official depth readings. The lake is so deep the US Navy test submarines out of Bayview.  The lake water exits via Pend Oreille River to the Columbia River.

The scenery is spectacular with islands and mountains to the north and sheer cliffs to south (home to a mountain goat population). The city of Bayview  known for its floating houses (north end of the lake) is by far the official sailboat town on this lake and has one congested public boat launch (watch for power lines when stepping your mast). Honestly its not a good location to launch from during the busy summer months due to the heavy boat traffic and lack of vehicle with trailer parking; and when leaving you have to travel out of a narrow channel that can also be congested.

Next to Bayview Idaho is Farragut State Park the largest park in Idaho and neighbor to Bayview, (the official site of Inland WWII era training facility). Launching from Eagle Boat Launch is best as compared to launch from the Bayview launch, providing far more room for parking vehicles with boat trailers; though it can be at times congested in summer months. The best thing about this boat launch is that it is right on the open water with lots of dock space. For kayaks and dinghies there is a nice pebble beach to launch from and park at. There is a pump-out station and a reasonable fee to enter the park and use the boat launch ramp. During the summer there is also an evasive species wash station; do not expect to enter or leave this site without your boat and trailer being inspected. Beaver Bay rec. area at Farragut State Park (see picture below) has a swim area and is a nice place for kayakers to rest and use the restroom. Button Hook Bay at Farragut State Park (see picture below) has docks but no restrooms near by; you will have to hike about 1.5 miles to Beaver Bay to use a restroom. Button Hook Bay is a popular boating destination due to its beauty and a way to get out of the weather.

The city of Sandpoint is on the Northwest end of the lake and is a popular powerboat area with shallower and warmer waters. The city has two large launch areas, parks, and ample parking. The city also maintains a marina with some public space available for visitors. Fishing: Fish species info coming soon. See sign when fishing at this lake. For more fishing info call 208-769-1414.

SAILING/WIND CONDITION INFO - Lake Pend Oreille has distinct wind patterns depending upon where you are that are useful for those sailing or water skiing/wakeboarding on the lake. On the South end of the lake (Bayview & Farragut State Park area) the prevailing winds come typically from the Southwest. Usually the prevailing winds during the summer months come from the east. There are very high mountains around the south end of the lake that can at times can create thermal winds. With these high mountains it leave very few spots to avoid the large waves that the wind and storms can create. On the North end of the lake by Sandpoint there are typically three different wind patterns: In the summer breezes come steady from an Eastern direction. But again when weather fronts come to this area they usually bring a Southwest wind. And sometimes during the night a wind will come from the north -from Canada- but usually die by noon.  UP

Pend Oreille River  east of Albeni Falls Dam to Sandpoint, Idaho - Mid Draft Boats

The Pend Oreille River extends from the Lake Pend Oreille all the way to the Columbia River in Canada. The information here covers the river from Lake Pend Oreille to the Idaho, Washington Boarder not far past the Albeni Falls Dam. From Albeni Falls Dam to Lake Pend Oreille it's more of a reservoir in the summer and turns to a river during fall, winter, and spring when the dam is opened up. During the summer the flow on this river is very slow or non existent. But in late September they start to draw Lake Pend Oreille down so the flow on the river increases significantly. During the summer, primary activities include water skiing and sailing. Other times of the year the primary activity is fishing. There are 10 boat launches on the river/reservoir; nine are county owned and 1 is owned by a resort (see details below). I have included Cocolalla Creek sportsman access site even though technically it's not on the river but does give one access to the river and Cocolalla Creek marsh area, which is a beautiful area to kayak and fish from. There is no boat launch at the Cocolalla site; one must launch from the bank (see details below). Fishing: Large and Small Mouth Bass, limit of 6; two may be Large Mount Bass. No Large Mouth Bass under 16 inches. No size limit on Small Mouth Bass. Trout: Rainbow, Brown, Cutthroat, Lake, & Kokanee. Aggregate limit - 6, with no size limit. Bull Trout closed to harvest. Call the Idaho Fish & Game for changes in these rules, etc. at 208-769-1414. Directions: To access the river/reservoir from the north side of the river use HWY 2. On the south side of the river see a map as there are several roads to access the river/reservoir with. Maps: To view a map click on http://www.mapquest.com and type in either Sandpoint Idaho and view in a westward direction or type in Priest River Idaho and view in an eastern direction.  UP

Poirier Creek Reservoir - Kayaks

Poirier Creek Reservoir (not to be confused with Fish Lake that locals call Poirier Lake) is a few miles southeast of the city of Blanchard Idaho off of Poirier Ranch Rd. This reservoir is a small yet beautiful unknown reservoir in a grassy field with trees at its north end. The north end of the reservoir with its small cement spill way sits right off of the dirt road that comes directly from Poirier Ranch Road. The reservoirs southern end is surrounded by private farm land with no trespassing signs posted. Again this reservoir is small yet one could kayak in it and particularly on a hot day it would be a nice quite place to sit in the shade or swim. To access this reservoir from the city of Blanchard you take Poirier Rd, then before you could make a major right turn on this road you will meet Poirier Ranch Rd. Take this road straight up the hill and at the first major gravel intersection take a right, then go straight and just a short distance up this road to your left (south) you will see this reservoir. Facilities: No launches, water side access. No camping allowed, day use only. Fishing: No info at this time. Priest Lake (23,360 Acres) - Mid Draft Boats

VIEW LIVE WEB CAM FROM LEONARD PAUL STORE IN COOLIN IDAHO (SOUTH END OF LAKE)

This is Idaho’s 3rd largest natural lake, with 25 miles of length, 80 miles of shoreline and a depth of 400 feet.

Upper Priest Lake is connected to Priest Lake by a scenic 2.5 mile long shallow thorofare. When traveling via the thorofare to Upper Priest Lake, take it slow as there are hazards in the thorofare such as rocks and logs and the lake can be quite shallow (2-10') in some locations.

This has to be one of Idaho’s most gorgeous lakes due to its remote location and beautiful high heavily forested mountains on all sides. The significant abundance of wildlife also add a great deal to Priest Lake's beauty, and make it an extremely peaceful and enjoyable place to be.

There are two islands on this lake for both camping and great hiking. There are also camping facilities accessible via your car. Finding a camping site on this lake can be an issue during the busy summer season, but at other times of the year camp sites are fairly easy to get.

Water skiing/Wake boarding, and fishing are all very popular activities on this lake. This is also a great sailing lake with very consistent winds year around and lots of nice locations to anchor at.

Even though this lake has a lot of rocky show, it also has many beautiful beaches. All boat launch facilities on this lake are in shallow areas so it would be very difficult to launch a fixed keelboat into this lake. Mid draft boats and keelboats with swing keels are best suited for this lake.

Fishing: Fish species info coming soon. See sign when fishing at this lake. For more fishing info call 208-769-1414.

There are 16 launch sites on this lake, from paved launch sites to beaches that are popular to launch kayaks and canoes from. On this lake fixed keel sailboats and large power boats with deep drafts can be difficult to launch from due to the shallow depth of the launch sites.

See Upper Priest Lake information by clicking here...or go to Upper Priest Lake section at the bottom of this web page for more information about Upper Priest Lake.

Priest River - Kayaks to Small Boats with Motors

Priest River travels unimpeded from Priest Lake's small dam to the Pend Oreille River. This is a popular kayaking and fishing river. There are two primary launch sites on this river; one at Priest Lake State Park - Dickensheet Unit, and the other at Mud Hole Campground where the river empties into the Pend Oreille River. Dickensheet Unit is a campground with river access on either side of the Coolin Road Bridge. Launching takes place from the bank of the river. The other launch site is at Mud Hole Campground. There is a paved launch and beach where you can also travel from heading upriver or down river a short distance to the Pend Oreille River. Round Lake (120 acres) - Small Boats Manual - Yep its very round!

The name of the lake is very appropriate as it is nearly perfectly round. This is a very well known fishing lake. There is a stream that enters on the east then exits from the west side and is a blast to paddle on. The east side has a really nice marsh with very defined channels which are great to explore and fish in. One can see fish darting in and out of the weeds, and plenty of waterfowl. It’s a very clean lake with only electric motors allowed when it comes to motor power. The day I was at the lake there was a nice west wind crossing the lake for most of the day; I had a nice day sailing my sail yak here. The state park has many tent and RV sites, with of course restrooms and running water. There is a trail that goes all the way around the lake. Upper Priest Lake & Thorofare - Mid Draft Boats

Upper Priest Lake is the smaller sister to Priest Lake via connection to each by a thorofare. The thorofare is a slow moving river of 10'-20' deep that is a popular kayak and boating route (no wakes allowed). Upper Priest Lake is an extremely popular fishing lake but also popular with boaters for general boating. This lake is a "no wake" lake even though at times one can see boats creating wakes at high speeds. This rule is enforced heavily during the summer months. There are two boater campgrounds on this lake, both inaccessible by car. During the summer months, particularly in July, it can be hard to find an available camp site. Fishing: Fish species info coming soon. See sign when fishing at this lake. For more fishing info call 208-769-1414.

The thorofare to Upper Priest Lake can be accessed via 4 launch sites. Before entering the thorofare there are 2 launch sites at Lion Head State Park (preferred by the locals because they are closer to the mouth of the thorofare) a boat launch and a site where you can launch off a beach. The third is at Beaver Creek State Park, designated as a boat launch for small boats. The fourth location is not really a boat launch, but is a site one can portage their canoe or kayak to. This is located on the thorofare at Beaver Creek State Park (see picture to right). When traveling via the thorofare to Upper Priest Lake, take it slow as there are hazards in the thorofare such as rocks and logs and the lake can be quite shallow (2-10') in some locations.
